Not Just Quilting
We were welcomed back to the Autumn season with a wonderful display of all things quilted. Our member Rachel introduced us to her friends from The Midhurst Quilters Group, then told us a short history of quilting. She told us how it was initially a technique adopted by soldiers to make their armour more comfortable and that the craft developed to using scraps of material to create warm clothing and bed coverings. Showing us beautiful items that the quilters group had made, Rachel explained how modern quilters design their pieces and how they make them. It was amazing to discover what an incredibly versatile craft it has become with quilts for bed covers but also bags, rugs, cushions and needle cases to name a few, and all so colourful.
The Midhurst Quilters all make their own pieces but also, in the true spirit of a quilting group, also join together to work on group projects which they donate to The Linus Foundation. This is a wonderful charity that collects handmade quilts to distribute to people who will benefit from them. Donations go to hospitals and care homes, to refugees and orphans and many others. It was great to hear of such a heart warming charity and I’m sure those quilts must become treasured possessions for people who have needed help and kindness in their lives.
After their presentation there was a slide show of some modern quilts that have been exhibited in London in recent years. It showed how quilting has been taken even further as an art form and that now quilts hang on gallery walls beside paintings. Finally some images of The Gee’s Bend Quilters from Alabama illustrated how the spirit of groups quilting (first out of necessity but now as an art which carries a strong message about equality) is still strong in communities all around the world.
There were delicious refreshments provided by Anne and Lesley and a raffle to round off a really entertaining evening. Thank you ladies for volunteering to tell us all about your fabulous creations!
