What’s in a View?

In March we welcomed Bill Avenell back to the hall for a very entertaining talk about a selection of views in West Sussex. Bill was a geography teacher for many years, so while reminding us of some beautiful places in West Sussex he gave us fascinating insights on why they existed and how they were formed. He explained the geographical characteristics of the South Downs’ Faulking Escarpment, West Wittering’s sand drift, and the drowned river valley that gave us Bosham Harbour. After encouraging us all to visit the 2000 year old yew trees at Kingley Vale, Bill moved on to manmade views. The 16th century Hammer Ponds, Ouse Valley Viaduct and the Chichester Canal - great remnants of industry from the past but beautiful just the same. Views of Arundel from the south and what remains of Brighton Pier reminded us of the social history of the area before rounding off the evening with the natural phenomenon of The Seven Sisters.

It was a very enjoyable evening and over delicious refreshments from Rachel and Sue, several of us resolved to visit our local area more often. We followed with our AGM, which included reports of the past year and the re-election of the committee with Emma as President.
